About Us
We are a men’s barbershop chorus based in Norwich and are members of BABS (British Association of Barbershop Singers). Barbershop singing was formerly introduced to Norfolk in 1975 with eight founding members who were directed by a Mrs Rosemary Kimmins and 36 years later we are directed by another lady director Mrs Carol Logan. We sing “a cappella” four part close harmony songs scored for tenor, lead, baritone and bass, a wide range of popular British and American music, some old, some new (i.e. compositions by Cole Porter, Hoagy Carmichael, The Beatles, Elton John, John Denver).
We sing in concert mainly in Norfolk and Suffolk, in Churches, WI branches, private celebrations, church concerts, music festivals, charity fund raising events etc etc.
The club is always pleased to welcome visitors to our Wednesday evening rehearsals either with a view to joining us or just to listen but please use the “CONTACT US” button on the web site to let us know if you wish to come along.
Our chorus now is growing and recent free Learn to Sing Courses have been very successful in swelling our numbers. One of our new members recently said “I have never sung, played an instrument before nor can I read music but had always enjoyed listening to others. My singing experience was once a year at a Christmas carol concert! The course was excellent, it introduced me to a new circle of friends with a shared interest ,it was relaxed and everyone was made to feel at home, straight away I was hooked, I was surprised how good it makes you feel. I would recommend an LTS course to anyone especially as it was free, and I’ve now joined the chorus!”
We meet every Wednesday evening at 7.30pm at Lionwood School, Telegraph Lane East, Norwich, NR1 4AN, having recently moved from Thorpe House Langley Prep. School.
The more formal name of the chorus is “Norwich Barbershop Harmony Club” but we are more often known as “Fine City Chorus”.
Please get in touch if you are interested. (CONTACT US).
introduced to Norfolk in 1975 as a result of an evening class set up at Wensum Lodge in Norwich
with the eight course members being conducted by Rosemary Kimmins. Very shortly after this the group formed themselves into the Norwich Barbershop Singers with Mrs Kimmins as their first Musical Director- a novel choice for an all male group, now some 35 years later we have another female Chorus Director, Carol Logan. We sing unaccompanied, four part, close harmony songs scored for tenor, lead, baritone, and bass voices. Many of the songs date from the latter part of the 19th century onwards and are special arrangements of popular songs of yesteryear. Now of course more modern popular songs are sung such as written by the Beatles, Cole Porter, Hoagy Carmichael etc.
